The Art of Lighting

Lighting design is a science and an art, incorporate it into a yacht and there are additional challenges and benefits. Yachts have their own unique challenges when it comes to lighting.  There are elements that need to be taken into consideration – design, décor, heat, power consumption, durability, etc.  There’s one type of light that can cover all of these areas….LED lighting.  LED lighting is the newest technology in lighting.  LED’s can be used to build energy-efficient lighting products that save energy, help protect the environment, reduce maintenance costs and make people and objects look much more attractive than traditional lighting.  And they can last much longer than traditional lighting.

For the interior of your yacht, LED lighting has the benefits of being small, flexible, durable, and use less electrical energy on their own which in turn reduces the amount of heat they produce.  They also come in a range of color temperatures to work with the design of your space.  LED lights offer the range from warm lighting to cooler lighting depending on the needs.  If your yacht has a crisp, clean all white interior, a cooler light will set if off and give the whites a pure crisp look.  If the interior is designed in warmer tones with a lot of darker wood work you will want a warmer color to bring in the warmth of the wood.

With the right design, LED lights can have a lifetime of 50,000 hours and more in continuous operation. Depending on how many hour-a-day they are operating, that can be from 6 to 7 years to as many as 20 to 30.

The initial costs of LED lighting are more expensive than traditional lighting but how do you define expensive?  Is it the up-front cost of a light or do you factor in the cost of energy to run that light and the cost to change the light bulbs?

You are cruising on a warm summer night, the yacht is anchored and there are no mosquitoes buzzing around yourself or the lights….Just another benefit of LED lighting.  Studies have shown that insects fly less towards LED lights than to traditional lamps.

Another perk of LED lights on yachts is their durability in rough conditions.  Other lamps have difficulties surviving the water, salt, wave impact, vibration, UV radiation and the big temperature differences on board.  A correctly constructed LED light can withstand the harshest conditions.

LED lights have the ability to dim the light without flickering and they use less electrical energy, which, on a boat, is the same as less diesel consumption.  Electrical energy is a major issue when designing a yacht, so anything you can do to reduce energy consumption is a benefit – for the fuel use and the air conditioning.

The design element with LED lighting is used to influence mood.  The programming of different LED colors can change the mood, or enhance an experience.  Applications include the modification of a pool of illumination or a lounge light that changes according to the time of day.

The interior and exterior design of your yacht should be as unique, if not more, than your home.

Is your Home Ready for a Summertime Party?

Planning to do an outdoor party in your terrace or courtyard?

Well, here are patio lighting decor ideas to make your parties look totally rocking. It is absolutely amazing to host a patio party at night during the spring or warm summer. The cool breeze and a full moon above will create a mesmerizing environment for the party.

Lighting is the key for any party. Properly placed lighting can define an outdoor patio while adding stylish charm, creating a comfortable outdoor space that allows you and your guests to enjoy the beauty of nature well into the evening.

A well-lighted front entrance enables you to accent your home’s design and greet visitors. Wall lanterns on each side of the door will give your home a warm, welcoming look, while assuring the safety of those who enter.

To conserve energy, consider post and wall lanterns that use LED or CFL light sources.

Dimmer controls aren't just for chandeliers and other interior lighting. Fitting your outdoor fixtures with dimmer controls will give you the flexibility to design a lighting plan with multiple uses and decorative effects.

Landscape lighting works with your other outdoor lighting to showcase your home and the surrounding grounds with a warm glow after the sun goes down.

For safety and the guarantee of a well cooked meal, don’t forget to add more light over the barbecue area. To accomplish this, install a series of recessed fixtures to provide enough light.

We have good news for anyone that doesn’t like mosquitoes. LED lights DO NOT attract mosquitoes. YAY!!!! Mosquitoes are attracted to fluorescent lights and other ultraviolet light sources; and LED lights do not produce ultraviolet light.

Also, LED lights do not emit carbon dioxide, another reason these little guys are not attracted to LED lighting. This is great, huh?

In addition, pools can be illuminated with underwater LED lighting providing beauty and safety for evening entertaining.

Add a touch of your style to your outdoor living space with an outdoor fan.

Ceiling fans work just as well outside as they do in interior spaces. Particularly in a covered deck or patio spaces, fans offer a great way to circulate air and provide light. Whether traditional or modern, an outdoor ceiling fan will turn your outdoor area into a breezy oasis.

Is your patio ready for a summertime party? Hurry up and start making some changes, it’s time dust off that BBQ and get ready for great days of sunshine.

Wedding Gifts from Swarovski

This week's guest post is written by Paige Farrey

This is the season of weddings and new beginnings…. An exciting time for those getting married.

For those tying the knot, congratulations and all the best for a lifetime of love and happiness! As you prepare for your big day, part of the preparation is working on the list of items you need to start your life together. Some couples work on a gift registry at a number of different stores to either start a home or add items that have been forgotten during “single” life. Or, as some get married, you’ve already collected the china and silver from generations before and what you now need are the sources to create a “home” with your new spouse.

How do you move from the idea of “my” place and “your” place and create the “our” place?

There may be subtle changes needed, new window treatments, new towels, etc; or a complete overhaul to a home may be necessary. Now is the time you can create the home together. Choosing the kitchen of your dreams or just adding a new sink and faucet to update the look. Purchasing a new dining room set or just switching out the chandelier. Creating a spa-like bathroom or just updating the vanity and lighting. These are all some of the choices you can make establishing your nest.

As a guest during the wedding season, there is always the stress of purchasing the “perfect” gift for such a special occasion. A piece for the home is nice as it is something that will be there as a reminder of their wedding day and hopefully is something they can use on a regular basis or appreciate on a daily basis.

Swarovski Crystal Home Accessories offers nice choices adding sophistication and a classic form of “bling” to the home.  The Crystalline Toasting Flutes are delicate, elegant and very festive – perfect for a very special occasion.

The Ambiray Picture Frames are timeless sophistication. With a strong, modern silhouette, the graceful design shines in stainless steel with a large number of tiny faceted clear crystals. The pure shape and clean lines complement any interior.

The Crystalline Red or White Wine Glasses make your private or group dining experience a memorable one. Their stems are filled with clear crystals for a sparkling effect and the base is made of a large faceted clear crystal.

A wedding picture would pop in the Starlet Picture Frame with thousands of shimmering chatons glittering in the columns of this festive picture frame with silver-tone metal details.

For the couple that enjoys a good cocktail party or just martinis after a long day, the Crystalline Cocktail Glasses turn an evening into a festive occasion. The stems are filled with clear crystal chatons that lend a sparkling effect and the base is a large faceted clear crystal. And if all else fails, there are gift certificates to their favorite home store or restaurant.

Congratulations to all the happy couples!! And to those not getting married, enjoy the parties with wonderful friends and fabulous reasons to celebrate.

10 Things to Do with Mom on Mother's Day

Have you ever taken your mom out to eat on Mother's Day? If you have, you know it's one of the busiest days of the year -if not the busiest - when it comes to restaurants. Although going out to eat is nice, and means Mom won't have to cook, it's a crowded experience that's soon over and done.

Whether you see your mom everyday, or you see her once a year, you'll make her Mother's Day very special if you can spend time with her on that special day. Some families have a routine where they take Mom out to eat, or come over and fix dinner for her, but this year, why not do something different?

We've created a list of things that all moms would love to do on Mother's Day. Of course, you'll want to choose the activity that would suit your mom's preferences (if she recently had hip surgery she may not want to go rock climbing!).
1) Take your mom to the park if the weather permits. Sit on the glider and chat. Enjoy the atmosphere and the company.
2) Go bowling. Make a day of it: shoot pool, have pizza or subs, and just have fun. Some moms don't get out a lot, caught up in the housework and tending kids, so she might enjoy a day of exercise and laughs.
3) Take Mom to the movies. Let her choose the movie, you take care of the snacks and drinks. She'll have a great time and every time she sees that movie in the future, she'll think of you.
4) Consider taking your mom to visit a friend or family member that she rarely sees. Driving for an hour or two to make your mom happy is a cool way to spend this Mother's Day.
5) Go with your mom to get photographs together. You'll treasure these photographs and so will she. The photos don't have to be ordinary - consider fun photo studios where you dress up like you're in the Wild West or similar photos. Make sure you have an appointment in advance.
6)  Take your mom shopping at a store that specializes in something like coffee, spa and bath products, or something else your mom likes. You don't have to go to a great expense, if you can't afford it; just let her pick out an item or two.
7) Take your mom to a place she enjoyed as a child. Over the years you've likely heard your mom mention places she loved as a child so take her to one of these places and she'll be full of fabulous memories for the day.
8) Take Mom for a massage. Who wouldn't love to relax and unwind, and enjoy a nice massage? Join her and have a massage for yourself, too.
9) Give your mom a surprise party. It'll be a huge surprise since most moms don't expect a party on Mother's Day. Set out photo albums of Mom when she was younger, and ones that contain photos of her and her children. She'll love the thought you put into this surprise.
10) Offer to take the other children and let Mom have a day alone. A day of peace and quiet, freedom to do whatever she feels like, and not having to deal with children for one whole day could be just what the doctor ordered for multi-tasking moms.
I hope you like these ideas and they help you to plan something new and different this year; Mom will love it and so will you. But, if you have another ideas to add to this list, please feel free to share them on the comment section below.

Reasons to Hang a Chandelier in the Kitchen
