Filter Your Tap Water!- Part 2

Now, after we’ve searched our tap water, now it’s time to find a filter that works and get rid of your bottles of waters

Find a filter that works

Once you know what contaminants you have in your tap water, find a filter.

Have you ever heard of Everpure?

Everpure is a leading name in water treatment for the residential, commercial and food service markets. Everpure sets the standard for water filtration.

The filter membrane has nearly 6 times the filtering surface area of carbon filters, so it’s like packing nearly 6 filters into one canister.

Everpure uses a reverse osmosis system that filters out a wider range of contaminants than most ordinary carbon filters.

Reverse Osmosis systems help you deal with problems ordinary carbon filters typically can’t, for example: arsenic, lead, copper, sodium, nitrates, fluoride, cysts, TDS and pharmaceutical contaminants.

The H-300 is one of the most popular filtration systems that Everpure offers; and this is because the operating cost is lower than the price of bottled water

The H-300 is a single cartridge, sanitary quick change filtration system. The cartridge is encapsulated and removes from the system with just a quarter turn. This means that replacing the H-300 filter cartridge is sanitary and as easy as changing a light bulb, in fact it’s even easier than changing a light bulb and there is almost no chance you will get electrocuted.

Designed with Everpure’s Micro-Pure technology, the H-300 delivers great tasting water every time, while reducing the following contaminants:

Ø      Lead
Ø      Cysts (such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium)
Ø      Volatile organic compounds (VOC) including trihalomethanes (THM)
Ø      Chlorine, taste and odor
Ø      Dirt and Cloudiness
Ø      Mold and algae
Ø      Oxidized iron, manganese and sulfides
Ø      Particles 0.5 micron and larger in size

The H-300 also contains a scale inhibitor to reduce lime and scale build-up on appliances that use water, so you can install this system with an ice maker, instant hot water dispenser, point of use water cooler or to a drinking water faucet installed next to your kitchen sink.

Filtering your water will improve the taste of your coffee, tea, juice, soups and
sauces.

Skip bottled water

Despite marketing hype, bottled water is not necessarily any safer than tap water, and it can cost up to 1,900 times more! In fact, industry reports show that up to 44 percent of bottled water is just tap water -- filtered in some cases, but not necessarily in all cases. And because bottled water manufacturers aren't required to publish their water quality tests, you may not know exactly what you're getting.

Bottled water may be contaminated with plastic additives that migrate from the bottles.

Filter your Tap Water! - Part 1

Do you constantly complain about the taste of your water? Are you always buying bottled water?

If your answer is YES!...Then, this post is for you.

We all know that water is a basic necessity; no living thing can survive long without it. Next to the air we breathe, water is our most important resource for existence. While it may seem that there is an abundance of water, when you consider the composition and availability of the earth’s water a different picture emerges.

Ø      75% of the earth is made up of water. However –
Ø      97% of that water is salt water, which means that –
Ø      3% of the earth’s water is fresh water. But –
Ø      2% of that fresh water is frozen in icecaps and glaciers. Which leaves –
Ø      1% of the water on the entire earth available for human consumption.

Human water usage put our vital need for clean, safe water in context:

Ø      Humans are comprised of 55-60% water
Ø      We can survive more than a month without food, but only a week without water
Ø      The average person in the United States uses about 80-100 gallons of water per day

So, it’s important to be aware of potential hazards in our water. While some contaminants can influence taste and clarity, others can be far more harmful to our family’s health. That’s why it’s vital to know the potential contaminants and their implications along with the filtration options available to us.

Learn how to stay hydrated while avoiding common drinking water pollutants. Here's how to:
1. Identify the contaminants in your home tap water
2. Find a filter that works
3. Skip bottled water

Identify the contaminants in your home tap water

Environmental Working Group (EWG) has compiled millions of state water testing records to create a National Drinking Water Database. This database makes it easy for us to identify and understand the contaminants in our water -- and find the right filter.

Most water utilities meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's tap water regulations. So what are the problems with tap water?

There are many unregulated contaminants -- like chromium-6 -- in American drinking water. The EWG has identified 316 chemicals in U.S. tap water -- 202 of which aren't regulated. EPA's failure to protect drinking water sources from pollution and to develop enforceable standards for scores of common tap water contaminants leaves the public at risk.

Are you ready to research your water?

Learn about contaminants in your tap water by searching this interactive, user-friendly database. It covers 48,000 communities in 45 states and the District of Columbia. Just enter your zip code in the search box and select your local water utility.

Now… are you ready to use a water filter system? Are you still convinced that bottled water is the only best option for drinking water?

Stay tuned. In the next post you will meet a great water filter that will change your life!

Easy Ways to Save Money and Energy

All of us know that energy costs money, but some of us greet our bills each month with alarm when we observe how much our consumption is costing us. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the average family spends approximately $1,600 per year on utility bills alone.

Use of new lighting technologies can reduce lighting energy use in homes by 50%-75%

Let's take a look at few easy ways to reduce your electric energy consumption from lighting

Turn off the lights when you do not need them

Install and use! dimmers where possible

Use motion or occupancy sensors or timers to turn outdoor lighting on and off automatically

Use energy-saving LED or fluorescent bulbs wherever possible. They produce significantly more light for every watt consumed compared to incandescent sources, and now have excellent color qualities equal to incandescent sources

If you have ceiling fans in your house, turn them on and use them properly. Ceiling fans are a great and affordable way to add comfort to your home year-round. They should be set to spin counter-clockwise in the summer, which pulls hot air up to the ceiling and away from the living space. This allows you to set your thermostat higher and save up to 40% on air conditioning costs.

Put Your Home in the Perfect Light

Lighting can make a big difference in your home. Good lighting helps you see better and perform tasks more easily. It also provides safety, security and a sense of comfort. Lighting, as well as lighting controls, provides the flexibility to adjust and adapt the mood and ambiance of your home.

Here are some tips for planning an effective lighting scheme:

  • Identify the activities that occur in each room (reading, cooking, grooming, laundry, homework, etc.).
  • Identify the mood or ambience desired.
  • Identify the decorative elements you wish to emphasize.
  • Keep in mind dark colors absorb much light, so dark wall colors and finishes need supplementary light.
  • When remodeling, identify existing electrical locations.
  • Identify areas serving more than one purpose and those that require more than one type of lighting.

Summer style…enjoy the outdoors and beat the heat!

If there’s one thing you can count on in South Florida, it is the undeniable heat during the summer!

That’s no reason to give up on spending time outside though.   There are plenty of ways to keep cool.  If you must be outside during the day, hopefully it is on, near or close to a body of water.  Otherwise, the evening sunsets and gazing at the stars and moon are a wonderful times to spend outside.

Make you patio as luxurious as a 5-star resort.  Invest in comfortable furniture that goes with your own personal style; contemporary, transitional or traditional.  There are many options to choose from, just find the one that fits your space and is comfortable.  Add the perfect lighting and accessories and your outside can be as inviting as the inside.

Incorporate decorative lighting to illuminate the area with a glow that won’t compete with the stars and moon.  Dimmers on every light will allow you to create the desired mood you are trying to achieve, whether you are spending time outside to read or a soft glow over cocktails.  The levels of light will help you create these moods – wall lanterns, table and floor lamps and ceiling mounted fixtures all add different dimensions.

In the heat of the Florida summer, decorative fans with or without lights will help circulate the air on those hot, still nights.  Fans for patios are available in a number of styles and finishes to coordinate with your particular look and style.

Casablanca has thought of everything by incorporating a sound system in their fan – the Concert Breeze Light Fixture is a light fixture and sound system all in one.  Now you can have light, fan and music all in one piece.

Be sure that all fixtures are “damp” or “wet” location.  “Damp” location is normally or periodically subject to condensation of and includes partially protected locations.  “Wet” location is a location in which water splash or flow on or against a fixture.

Around the pool, be sure to keep the area well lit for safety and aesthetics.  There are many options for around the pool and patio area:  deck lamps that mount directly on the side of a fence, in ground lights, recessed wall lights, and an array of landscape lighting choices.

There is no reason to hide inside during the summer, just prepare the outside with the proper elements and you will enjoy the summer outside, even in South Florida.

Make Your Kitchen the Perfect Gathering Spot

We offer you tips for taking the hub of your home to new heights with well-planned, beautiful lighting. A well-lit kitchen will make your family and friends want to pull up a chair and stay a while. Light can help enliven a space, making food look more appetizing and helping dark tables feel bright and convivial. The advent of slimline LEDs (many of which do not require hardwiring) means it is now easier than ever to retrofit difficult spaces, such as under cabinets, without a huge investment. A spacious kitchen needs layers of light - an overall light, task light and accent light - to be efficient and create a homey feel.

Tips to Make your Bath Look Fabulous- Part 2

Last week we began our bathroom renovation by choosing a style, picking a finish and adding a fresh coat of paint for a new summer look. Now it’s time to select the accessories

Bath accessories are the perfect way to update your bathroom without spending a fortune on expensive remodeling. While a new toothbrush holder or soap dispenser many not seem like much, upgrading your bath accessories can have a big impact on the overall look and feel of your bathroom. Clean, geometric designs will add a sleek and stylish touch, and a unified set of bath accessories helps create a professional, finished look. You'll be pleasantly surprised what a few changes can do!

Let’s begin…

Towel Rings

These are usually used in guest baths, towel rings are normally placed next to the sink. Keep in mind that many of the new towel rings on the market feature stylish designs, making them a beautiful focal point in a small bath. Be sure to hang the towel ring at a comfort level for those normally using the bath, including children or seniors. A good rule of thumb is to leave at least 18 inches below a towel ring so a hand towel can hang freely.

Towel Bars

Standard towel bar lengths are 18 and 24 inches. Hang the bar at a comfortable height of 48 inches above the floor, making sure to leave sufficient space below the bars for towels to hang freely. If the towel bar is hung in a children’s bath, hang the bar at a height of 36 inches. In either case, be sure to think about the location of electrical switches and outlets when hanging your towel bars.

If you want to add a fashionable element to the bath, double towel bars are the perfect choice. In addition, double towel bars are ideal for a family bath, as a number of towels can be hung on the accessory.

Paper Holders

Today’s bath accessory collections include a variety of paper holder options, including traditional wall-mounted, spring-loaded styles; pivoting paper holders and free-standing paper holders. Determining the style for your bath is a matter of taste.

Tooth Brush Holders/Cup Holders/Soap Dish vs. Shelves

To make sure your bath looks organized and clutter-free, use your best judgment in determining the correct number or accessories for your bath. A general rule is two-to-three counter accessories, such as a tooth brush holder, cup holder and soap dish.

If your bath is small, or features a pedestal sink, you should choose mounted styles, or perhaps a glass shelf. Shelves can be a handy, space-efficient alternative to cabinets and are also a good place to display decorative items, such as candles or potpourri.

After all these tips, what do you think? Leave us a comment or share with us the new look of your bathroom. We would love to see those before and after pictures.

Create Your Perfectly Welcome Home

Your entryway should be an inviting place with warm, enveloping light welcoming you and your guests. No other area of the house sets the mood like the entryway, both inside and outside. A dimly lit entry can seem foreboding and off putting.
Fortunately, lighting is fairly inexpensive and adaptable, able to change its style at the switch of a shade or the swap of a ceiling figure. Also essential to an inviting entryway are dimmers, which allow flexibility and mood enhancement.

For more ideas about lighting your entryway, as well as the rest of your home, check out our blog, follow us on facebook and twitter, or come visit either of our two showrooms.

Tips to Make your Bath Look Fabulous- Part 1

For many of us the bathroom is a retreat. From luxury showers to whirlpool tubs our bathrooms have become our private spas. But what if your bathroom is more the down-to-earth typical 5x8 utilitarian box?

Did you know that there’s so much you can do with a tiny bath and the real secrets lies in the accessories

Whether you are looking for ultra-modern wall mounted accessories or more traditional counter top accessories: towel bars, soap dish, toilet paper holder, and so forth provide the finish touch to any bath project.

This month, we are going to show you how to update the look of your bath. You will see how easy and quick it can be, and the result will be exceptional.

Let’s get started…

1. Begin by emptying your bathroom of all the clutter. Eliminate your old towel bars and toilet paper holder.

2. The next step is determining your style. Is your style traditional, contemporary, or modern?  Nowadays, manufacturers have created bathroom accessories to match with their sinks, toilets, and tubs to make your life easier

3. Select the finish for your bathroom. Pick traditional chrome for a bit of sparkle, brushed nickel for a soft glow or oil rubbed bronze for quiet elegance.

4. Add a fresh coat of paint. Try earth tones and neutral colors such as pale greens and browns. But, if you want an elegant look, then try white; it is always a good choice. Lighter colors will keep your bathroom bright while maintaining a touch of warmth.

5. Now, it’s time to take accurate measurements of your bath and find out the number of accessories to match your bathroom décor. For example, a master bath with double-bowl sinks will require a number of accessories compared to a small guest bath.

Bathroom accessories can create order and keep counters clear. And well-positioned towel bars not only offer storage close at hand, but also present a design component to hang colorful, coordinating towels.

So… Are you ready to begin the transformation? What’s the style of your bathroom? What’s the finish you want for your bathroom? What color do you want to paint the bathroom?

Leave us your thoughts in the comments below; and stay tuned for the next post, we will talk about tips for placing the most common bathroom accessories to make your bathroom look unique.

Great Lighting Solutions for Summertime

It’s summertime now, the days are longer than the nights, therefore; you don’t need so much light during day, specially when there’s plenty of natural light.

Daylight sensors are the perfect solution for this time of the year; they automatically dim the lights when there’s sufficient daylight coming into a room to avoid wasting energy.

A daylight sensor is a practical addition for almost any room in a house. Having that perfect balance of electric light and daylight also makes a room more inviting.

Now that kids are on vacation, and they are spending more time in the house, it is easy to expect to see lights left on unconsciously. Well, no more worries, occupancy sensors are the perfect solution for you.

Occupancy sensors turn lights on automatically when you walk into a room and turn them off when you leave.

Also, these sensors are perfect to use in those rooms that you often enter with your hands full, such as kitchen, a laundry room or a storage room.

Also, you have the vacancy sensors; these are perfect to be installed in a bedroom so the lights won’t turn on at night if your partner walks in while you’re sleeping. Also, these can be installed in a hallway so that your pet won’t unintentionally trigger the lights

But if you are an outdoor person that loves to spend the summer by the pool doing barbeques; then fan controls are your best companion for this season.

Now you can control up to 4 fans, all from an intuitive remote control, and adjust fan speed from up to 3 locations. Isn’t this great?

So… what do you think? Is you home ready for summertime? Begin saving energy and money with these great solutions and enjoy this season with these great lighting control solutions.

Hug your Cat and Meet The Lone Ranger

Did you know that today is Hug Your Cat Day? Go ahead and give your cat a big, furry hug.

If you're a cat lover, you can really appreciate the warm, cozy feeling you get when you curl up on a couch or chair, and hug your cat. The only problem is, your cat will most likely only allow a brief hug before sauntering away. If your cat is a true hugger, count your blessings.

Today, we have a big guest at Farrey’s; his name is The Lone Ranger. He was born last night and found in the back yard of Laly and Javier’s house. This couple works here at Farrey’s in the purchasing department and they have an incredible love for animals.

This newborn kitty, less than 24 hours old, is full of hugs and love; and we all hope that he survives, he is a true warrior.  Isn’t he cute?

You don't have a cat? You can correct this today. The month of June is "Adopt a Cat Month".

The Art of Lighting

Lighting design is a science and an art, incorporate it into a yacht and there are additional challenges and benefits. Yachts have their own unique challenges when it comes to lighting.  There are elements that need to be taken into consideration – design, décor, heat, power consumption, durability, etc.  There’s one type of light that can cover all of these areas….LED lighting.  LED lighting is the newest technology in lighting.  LED’s can be used to build energy-efficient lighting products that save energy, help protect the environment, reduce maintenance costs and make people and objects look much more attractive than traditional lighting.  And they can last much longer than traditional lighting.

For the interior of your yacht, LED lighting has the benefits of being small, flexible, durable, and use less electrical energy on their own which in turn reduces the amount of heat they produce.  They also come in a range of color temperatures to work with the design of your space.  LED lights offer the range from warm lighting to cooler lighting depending on the needs.  If your yacht has a crisp, clean all white interior, a cooler light will set if off and give the whites a pure crisp look.  If the interior is designed in warmer tones with a lot of darker wood work you will want a warmer color to bring in the warmth of the wood.

With the right design, LED lights can have a lifetime of 50,000 hours and more in continuous operation. Depending on how many hour-a-day they are operating, that can be from 6 to 7 years to as many as 20 to 30.

The initial costs of LED lighting are more expensive than traditional lighting but how do you define expensive?  Is it the up-front cost of a light or do you factor in the cost of energy to run that light and the cost to change the light bulbs?

You are cruising on a warm summer night, the yacht is anchored and there are no mosquitoes buzzing around yourself or the lights….Just another benefit of LED lighting.  Studies have shown that insects fly less towards LED lights than to traditional lamps.

Another perk of LED lights on yachts is their durability in rough conditions.  Other lamps have difficulties surviving the water, salt, wave impact, vibration, UV radiation and the big temperature differences on board.  A correctly constructed LED light can withstand the harshest conditions.

LED lights have the ability to dim the light without flickering and they use less electrical energy, which, on a boat, is the same as less diesel consumption.  Electrical energy is a major issue when designing a yacht, so anything you can do to reduce energy consumption is a benefit – for the fuel use and the air conditioning.

The design element with LED lighting is used to influence mood.  The programming of different LED colors can change the mood, or enhance an experience.  Applications include the modification of a pool of illumination or a lounge light that changes according to the time of day.

The interior and exterior design of your yacht should be as unique, if not more, than your home.

Is your Home Ready for a Summertime Party?

Planning to do an outdoor party in your terrace or courtyard?

Well, here are patio lighting decor ideas to make your parties look totally rocking. It is absolutely amazing to host a patio party at night during the spring or warm summer. The cool breeze and a full moon above will create a mesmerizing environment for the party.

Lighting is the key for any party. Properly placed lighting can define an outdoor patio while adding stylish charm, creating a comfortable outdoor space that allows you and your guests to enjoy the beauty of nature well into the evening.

A well-lighted front entrance enables you to accent your home’s design and greet visitors. Wall lanterns on each side of the door will give your home a warm, welcoming look, while assuring the safety of those who enter.

To conserve energy, consider post and wall lanterns that use LED or CFL light sources.

Dimmer controls aren't just for chandeliers and other interior lighting. Fitting your outdoor fixtures with dimmer controls will give you the flexibility to design a lighting plan with multiple uses and decorative effects.

Landscape lighting works with your other outdoor lighting to showcase your home and the surrounding grounds with a warm glow after the sun goes down.

For safety and the guarantee of a well cooked meal, don’t forget to add more light over the barbecue area. To accomplish this, install a series of recessed fixtures to provide enough light.

We have good news for anyone that doesn’t like mosquitoes. LED lights DO NOT attract mosquitoes. YAY!!!! Mosquitoes are attracted to fluorescent lights and other ultraviolet light sources; and LED lights do not produce ultraviolet light.

Also, LED lights do not emit carbon dioxide, another reason these little guys are not attracted to LED lighting. This is great, huh?

In addition, pools can be illuminated with underwater LED lighting providing beauty and safety for evening entertaining.

Add a touch of your style to your outdoor living space with an outdoor fan.

Ceiling fans work just as well outside as they do in interior spaces. Particularly in a covered deck or patio spaces, fans offer a great way to circulate air and provide light. Whether traditional or modern, an outdoor ceiling fan will turn your outdoor area into a breezy oasis.

Is your patio ready for a summertime party? Hurry up and start making some changes, it’s time dust off that BBQ and get ready for great days of sunshine.

Wedding Gifts from Swarovski

This week's guest post is written by Paige Farrey

This is the season of weddings and new beginnings…. An exciting time for those getting married.

For those tying the knot, congratulations and all the best for a lifetime of love and happiness! As you prepare for your big day, part of the preparation is working on the list of items you need to start your life together. Some couples work on a gift registry at a number of different stores to either start a home or add items that have been forgotten during “single” life. Or, as some get married, you’ve already collected the china and silver from generations before and what you now need are the sources to create a “home” with your new spouse.

How do you move from the idea of “my” place and “your” place and create the “our” place?

There may be subtle changes needed, new window treatments, new towels, etc; or a complete overhaul to a home may be necessary. Now is the time you can create the home together. Choosing the kitchen of your dreams or just adding a new sink and faucet to update the look. Purchasing a new dining room set or just switching out the chandelier. Creating a spa-like bathroom or just updating the vanity and lighting. These are all some of the choices you can make establishing your nest.

As a guest during the wedding season, there is always the stress of purchasing the “perfect” gift for such a special occasion. A piece for the home is nice as it is something that will be there as a reminder of their wedding day and hopefully is something they can use on a regular basis or appreciate on a daily basis.

Swarovski Crystal Home Accessories offers nice choices adding sophistication and a classic form of “bling” to the home.  The Crystalline Toasting Flutes are delicate, elegant and very festive – perfect for a very special occasion.

The Ambiray Picture Frames are timeless sophistication. With a strong, modern silhouette, the graceful design shines in stainless steel with a large number of tiny faceted clear crystals. The pure shape and clean lines complement any interior.

The Crystalline Red or White Wine Glasses make your private or group dining experience a memorable one. Their stems are filled with clear crystals for a sparkling effect and the base is made of a large faceted clear crystal.

A wedding picture would pop in the Starlet Picture Frame with thousands of shimmering chatons glittering in the columns of this festive picture frame with silver-tone metal details.

For the couple that enjoys a good cocktail party or just martinis after a long day, the Crystalline Cocktail Glasses turn an evening into a festive occasion. The stems are filled with clear crystal chatons that lend a sparkling effect and the base is a large faceted clear crystal. And if all else fails, there are gift certificates to their favorite home store or restaurant.

Congratulations to all the happy couples!! And to those not getting married, enjoy the parties with wonderful friends and fabulous reasons to celebrate.

10 Things to Do with Mom on Mother's Day

Have you ever taken your mom out to eat on Mother's Day? If you have, you know it's one of the busiest days of the year -if not the busiest - when it comes to restaurants. Although going out to eat is nice, and means Mom won't have to cook, it's a crowded experience that's soon over and done.

Whether you see your mom everyday, or you see her once a year, you'll make her Mother's Day very special if you can spend time with her on that special day. Some families have a routine where they take Mom out to eat, or come over and fix dinner for her, but this year, why not do something different?

We've created a list of things that all moms would love to do on Mother's Day. Of course, you'll want to choose the activity that would suit your mom's preferences (if she recently had hip surgery she may not want to go rock climbing!).
1) Take your mom to the park if the weather permits. Sit on the glider and chat. Enjoy the atmosphere and the company.
2) Go bowling. Make a day of it: shoot pool, have pizza or subs, and just have fun. Some moms don't get out a lot, caught up in the housework and tending kids, so she might enjoy a day of exercise and laughs.
3) Take Mom to the movies. Let her choose the movie, you take care of the snacks and drinks. She'll have a great time and every time she sees that movie in the future, she'll think of you.
4) Consider taking your mom to visit a friend or family member that she rarely sees. Driving for an hour or two to make your mom happy is a cool way to spend this Mother's Day.
5) Go with your mom to get photographs together. You'll treasure these photographs and so will she. The photos don't have to be ordinary - consider fun photo studios where you dress up like you're in the Wild West or similar photos. Make sure you have an appointment in advance.
6)  Take your mom shopping at a store that specializes in something like coffee, spa and bath products, or something else your mom likes. You don't have to go to a great expense, if you can't afford it; just let her pick out an item or two.
7) Take your mom to a place she enjoyed as a child. Over the years you've likely heard your mom mention places she loved as a child so take her to one of these places and she'll be full of fabulous memories for the day.
8) Take Mom for a massage. Who wouldn't love to relax and unwind, and enjoy a nice massage? Join her and have a massage for yourself, too.
9) Give your mom a surprise party. It'll be a huge surprise since most moms don't expect a party on Mother's Day. Set out photo albums of Mom when she was younger, and ones that contain photos of her and her children. She'll love the thought you put into this surprise.
10) Offer to take the other children and let Mom have a day alone. A day of peace and quiet, freedom to do whatever she feels like, and not having to deal with children for one whole day could be just what the doctor ordered for multi-tasking moms.
I hope you like these ideas and they help you to plan something new and different this year; Mom will love it and so will you. But, if you have another ideas to add to this list, please feel free to share them on the comment section below.
